Center for Powerful Public Schools Board of Directors is excited to announce that Javier Guzman has been selected to serve as the Center’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective immediately. Javier is a visionary educator with three decades of experience working with youth, communities, schools and districts to create transformative places of learning. Most recently he was Regional Director, Schools and Innovation at Big Picture Learning (BPL) where he led the growth of Big Picture Learning schools and BPL-inspired schools in California, from six schools in 2016 to over 40 in 2021. He conceived of and led the Upstream Collaborative, a seven-year project to redesign alternative education schools in California, and served as the Director of Program Strategy and Convenings for the Deeper Learning Equity Fellowship, a partnership between Internationals Network and Big Picture Learning. Javier shares, “I am deeply privileged and honored to build upon the tremendous legacy of Center for Powerful Public Schools, an organization that centers love in the process of achieving educational equity. The task at hand is to reinvent schools through place-based learning & personalized pathways, integrating schools and the community in intentional and empowering ways, centering students’ background and identities in the curriculum, and supporting school and district leaders to do the courageous work of implementing human-centered practices. This is what excites me most about leading the Center.”
“At the core of Javier's accomplishments is his belief that every student has talents and passions that deserve to be nurtured and cultivated,” said Center Board Chair Jeanne Fauci, “With his undeniable commitment to educational equity that encompasses student, teacher and family voice, the Center is well-positioned to amplify our commitment to school transformation.”
As the Center continues to expand its statewide work with schools and school districts, Javier’s record of accomplishments, his deep understanding of inclusive school communities and his experience supporting school leaders will provide new opportunities to significantly improve outcomes for Black and Brown children.
